Install on Windows

Set up Valorune on Windows.

Install

Your invite email includes a download link for Windows. The download is an .exe installer. Run it to install Valorune.

SmartScreen warning

When you run the installer, Windows may show a warning:

Windows protected your PC. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting.

This happens because Valorune is a new app that hasn’t yet built up reputation with Microsoft’s SmartScreen system. It’s standard for new independent software.

To proceed:

  1. Click More info in the warning dialog
  2. Click Run anyway

You only need to do this during installation. After that, Valorune opens normally.

Prerequisites

Valorune requires WebView2 Runtime, which is pre-installed on Windows 10 (version 21H2 and later) and Windows 11.

If it’s missing, the installer will prompt you to download it. Follow the prompt. It’s a quick install from Microsoft.

First launch

After installation, the onboarding wizard appears:

  1. Welcome: overview of what’s ahead
  2. Theme: choose Light, Dark, or System
  3. Features: a brief video walkthrough of wiki-links and the knowledge graph
  4. AI backend: Valorune downloads a small component for AI features. This runs locally on your machine and takes about a minute to set up.
  5. License: start a free trial or enter a license key

After onboarding, you’re ready to create a vault and start writing. See the Quickstart guide for next steps.

Troubleshooting

Installer fails to run Make sure you’re running Windows 10 or later. Valorune does not support Windows 8 or earlier.

AI backend fails to download Check your internet connection. The backend is a one-time download (~200 MB). If it fails, you can retry from Settings later. Writing and wiki-links work without the AI backend. AI features require it.
